Home protection and homeowners insurance are different products that solve different problems. Most homeowners need both.
Homeowners insurance covers sudden, unexpected events:
- Fire, lightning, windstorm, hail.
- Theft and vandalism.
- Liability if someone is injured on your property.
- Loss of use when your home is uninhabitable after a covered event.
Home protection covers normal wear-and-tear breakdowns:
- HVAC system fails after years of use.
- Water heater breaks down.
- Refrigerator stops cooling.
- Plumbing system develops a leak from age.
- Electrical components wear out.
The simple rule:
- If a tree falls on your roof, that's homeowners insurance.
- If your dishwasher dies after 8 years of normal use, that's home protection.
RMO MyHome is a service contract, not insurance. It does not replace homeowners insurance. Most members carry both property insurance for catastrophic events and MyHome for daily home-system breakdowns.
