Home protection and homeowners insurance are different products that solve different problems. Most homeowners need both.

Homeowners insurance covers sudden, unexpected events:

  • Fire, lightning, windstorm, hail.
  • Theft and vandalism.
  • Liability if someone is injured on your property.
  • Loss of use when your home is uninhabitable after a covered event.

Home protection covers normal wear-and-tear breakdowns:

  • HVAC system fails after years of use.
  • Water heater breaks down.
  • Refrigerator stops cooling.
  • Plumbing system develops a leak from age.
  • Electrical components wear out.

The simple rule:

  • If a tree falls on your roof, that's homeowners insurance.
  • If your dishwasher dies after 8 years of normal use, that's home protection.

RMO MyHome is a service contract, not insurance. It does not replace homeowners insurance. Most members carry both property insurance for catastrophic events and MyHome for daily home-system breakdowns.
